After the appearance in the late 1880s – early 1890s of the works of Arthur Conan Doyle about the famous private detective Sherlock Holmes (the novella "A Study in Scarlet," "The Sign of the Four," and the collection of stories "The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes"), the name of their author gained worldwide fame. Readers in many countries eagerly awaited new stories and novellas from him, in which this "loner from Baker Street" would act. The secret of such success lies not only in the remarkable ingenuity and observance characteristic of Doyle's hero but primarily in the vitality and truthfulness of this image. "Doyle's hero is the only literary character since Dickens who has firmly entered the life and language of the people," emphasized a contemporary of the author, the renowned wordsmith Gilbert Keith Chesterton.
This volume is the second of a four-volume edition, which includes all the works of the English classic about the adventures of Sherlock Holmes in Ukrainian translation.
