A few years ago, at the residence of Anna Yaroslavna in Saint-Lys near Paris, I was asked to create a children's book about Queen Anna — with beautiful illustrations, and to make it a sort of question-and-answer format about the life of Anna Yaroslavna, with all the more or less known facts and legends.
"But how to present them when our historians almost monthly refute each other? — I thought rhetorically. — Some facts have very different interpretations, such as the depiction in Sofia, the year of birth, the story with the Gospel, and many others..."
"After the first illustrations by the famous Kateryna Shtanko, it became clear that the dry text would not suit these sensual, demanding pictures at all. The story needed to be brought to life a little... Just then, a young guest arrived in Ukraine for the summer holidays, and I decided to show her old Kyiv... And then fate brought me together with the renowned painter Kateryna Kosianko, and the book was enriched with wonderful 'chronicle' illustrations."
"So now before you are seemingly two streams of narrative — the chronicle and the fairy tale, for in Anna's time this story would have been depicted in a 'chronicle' style, while today each of us can illustrate it in our own way. Will you try?"
