"The Fifteen-Year-Old Captain" is a novel by the French writer Jules Verne, first published in 1878. The plot of the novel begins with almost the entire crew of the whaling brig "Pilgrim" perishing in a confrontation with a whale. After the sailors' death, Dick Sand, a fifteen-year-old boy, has to become the captain of the ship. Five Africans, who accidentally found themselves on the ship, help Dick reach America — that is where the "Pilgrim" was supposed to go. But the treacherous Negoro, the ship's cook, secretly changes the course. Thus, the friends end up in Africa, as Negoro, an agent of slave owners, seeks revenge on Dick and intends to sell the Africans into slavery. All the passengers of the brig "Pilgrim" find themselves in mortal danger, from which they manage to escape alive only thanks to Dick Sand...
