"Ethnographic Groups of Ukrainians in the Carpathians. Hutsuls" is a scientific and journalistic work prepared by experienced scholars from the renowned academic Institute of Ethnology of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine, under the guidance of Academician of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine Professor Stepan Pavliuk. The monograph is dedicated to the study of all aspects of Hutsul life. Hutsul customary, legal, and ethical norms, beliefs, superstitions, demonology, customs, and rituals represent a complex and extremely valuable material for science. It traces the reflections of spiritual life from various epochs, starting from the primitive communal system, the combination of ancient pagan and later Christian elements, and the fantastic irrational notions with practical experience gained and tested over the centuries.
Rich in relict elements, Hutsul folklore, especially ritual songs, fairy tales, legends, and charms, is connected with beliefs and superstitions. In the folk poetry of the Hutsuls, such song genres as kolomyika and chronicle song have developed particularly. The unique character is marked by the melody of folk singing, instrumental music, traditional dances, original folk art, and more.
In the past, Hutsulshchyna was renowned for its rich applied and decorative arts: ceramics, wood carving, miracle painting, artistic weaving, embroidery, artistic metalworking, leather, and horn products. The traditional Hutsul clothing is distinguished by its unique color palette and artistic orientation, with its characteristic decorations and accessories (zghardas, cheresas, tobyvkas, etc.).
